Great article! As you say, "one barrel in 12 becomes material for plastic" so when we switch to renewables, we will have gotten rid of 11 out of 12 barrels of oil. That's a pretty big win for our health and environment. We need to find ways to get rid of that remaining barrel.
So what do we do about this? I’m allergic to foods that are packaged the typical clear, brittle plastic that many foods are now packaged in, so I’m all in on boycotting plastic. But it’s a struggle to find peanut butter, olive oil, cooking oils, berries, etc. that are not packaged in plastic.
Good question. There is much research and development into alternatives but scaling them up will prove difficult against the lobbying might of the fossil fuel companies.

We got along fine without plastic when I was a kid. Surely we could do it again.
